CUTTACK: Versatile film actor and arguably the best lead actor in Oriya films till date, Uttam Mohanty, has been selected for this year’s ‘FitFat Bioscope” award. “Uttam Mohanty has been selected for his extraordinary performance and notable contributions to Oriya cinema for the past four decades,” said Home Video Entertainment group chief Bapu Lenka here on Friday.

The award would be presented to Mohanty at a glittering function at Kala Vikash Kendra here on December 15, Mr. Lenka informed. He said the award carries a Bioscope of filigree work costing nearly Rs 20,000 and cash prize of Rs 25,000. The entertainment group along with FitFat Company instituted this award in 2003 to felicitate film personalities for their contributions to Oriya cinema.

Eminent film producer and director Parvati Ghosh had received the award in 2004 while actor, director and producer Prashant Nanda received the award in 2005 and music director Swarup Naik received the award in 2006. Last year, comedy king Jairam Samal received the award.

Mohanty has acted in over 200 Oriya films and about 30 Bengali films in lead character. He has also acted in one Hindi film ‘Naya Jahar’, a film on AIDS. Besides, he has also produced several documentaries for UNICEF apart from directing one Oriya movie ‘Jwain Pua’. Mr. Lenka informed that selection of this award was purely based on those personalities who have made cinema as their only profession and have worked consistently in the field. He however, informed that the criteria for this award could be revised in future with plans to increase the cash award. “Surf Excel has shown interest to sponsor this year’s award giving ceremony,” he added.
