None was injured in the attack as the crude devices failed to explode

PUDUCHERRY: Country bombs were thrown at an activist of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Vanarapet area here on Wednesday. However, none was injured in the incident as the crude devices did not explode.

According to police, the incident occurred around 11.15 a.m. when R.Ganesh (AIADMK) was standing at a bicycle repair shop close to his residence at Athimoolam Thope. A group of persons threw two country bombs at him and fled. Following a complaint lodged by Mr. Ganesh, the Othiyansalai police filed a case under Section 307 IPC and Section 3 of the Explosive Substances Act. He had also handed over the unexploded bombs to the police.

This was the second bomb attack against the activist in nine months. In the previous attack, country bombs were lobbed at his residence in the early hours of December 1, 2007. Window shutters of his house were smashed in the attack.

Police then linked the incident to the crude bomb blast on the same day near the Puducherry Railway Station killing a school student on the spot, besides injuring three of his friends.

Describing the attack on Mr.Ganesh as a case of “previous political enmity,” the police said rivalry was brewing between local activists of the Congress and the AIADMK in the area from the last municipal elections. The AIADMK nominee had won the local ward councillor’s post, defeating his Congress rival.

Owner of the bicycle repair shop R. Sasikumar said the attack took place while Mr. Ganesh was sitting in a chair after visiting a nearby temple in connection with a festival to be held shortly.

According to him, two youths came there and threw country bombs and immediately fled. One of the bombs fell on Mr. Ganesh and another landed on Mr. Sasikumar’s grandmother G. Nagammal (60), who fainted, he said.

However, both of them were not injured in the attack.

Superintendent of Police (North) V. Vijayakumar and other police officers visited the spot. The bomb detection and disposal squad was pressed into service.

The personnel conducted a thorough search at the site where the bombs were thrown and also places in and around the godown of the Food Corporation of India.
