Autorickshaw driver’s honesty honoured

PUDUCHERRY: Honesty and presence of mind earned K. Ramalingam, an autorickshaw driver, accolades from various quarters. . The 49-year-old returned a bag containing cash, a camera and documents that a French tourist had left in his vehicle to the Police department.

The autorickshaw driver had dropped the tourists, an elderly woman and her son, at the cemetery at Uppalam on Thursday afternoon. On returning to the auto stand near Manakula Vinayagar Temple, he found a black bag containing foreign and Indian currencies inside the vehicle.

“I immediately went back to the cemetery to find the passengers but they had left. I spoke to other drivers of my stand and decided to hand over the cash to Senior Superintendent of Police (Crime and Intelligence) B. Srikanth,” Mr. Ramalingam said.

An autorickshaw driver for the last nine years, loads of appreciation awaited him as he handed over the bag to the SSP. “The elderly woman thanked me for returning the cash. The SSP also appreciated me and I felt very happy. Members of the CITU also felicitated me.”

According to Mr. Srikanth, the two tourists were in Puducherry to pay respects to their deceased relatives.

“The bag contained €2,500 and Rs.30,000. It also had a camera and certain documents.”
