CUTTACK: In major breakthrough, the Cuttack city police have busted an inter-district gang involved in lifting of motorcycles. . The police have arrested eight persons in this connection and recovered 15 motorcycles from them.
Seven of the arrested persons are from the city and the lone receiver of the theft vehicles from Tangi in Khurda district.
Speaking to reporters here, the city DCP S Praveen Kumar said a special police squad comprising two ACPs and several inspectors made the breakthrough. The police have also recovered a revolver, a bhujali and five rounds of live bullets from their possession.
“The inter-state bike lifters were operating in several districts including Cuttack and Khurda. All the theft vehicles are first used in committing crimes and latter they are disposed of at throwaway prices,” Mr. Kumar said.
All the arrested persons are from Bidyadharpur area coming under Chauliaganj police station.
The identities of the members of the racket were not disclosed as the police are also looking for three other members of the gang who are absconding, Mr. Kumar added.
“The bike lifters were also involved in several looting incidents that took place in the city recently,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police S K Mohanty, who is in-charge of the Zone one of the city.
