Come summer, a wide variety dots road sides in Puducherry

PUDUCHERRY: Summer is synonymous with flowers. While the mercury rises by the day, it is the season for a variety of flowers to spring up across the town.

As different kinds of flowers beautify various spots of the town, a few summer flowers are predominant in Puducherry. Topping the list are the red ‘Delonix’ flowers, commonly known as ‘May flowers’, followed by ‘Cassia Fistula’ and neem flowers.

“A lot of trees blossom during summer. It is a physiological condition as the trees shed their leaves to conserve water and produce flowers. With heat, the trees to lose a lot of water,” Conservator of Forests P. Devaraj said.

He said ‘Cassia Fistula’ flowers are found in abundance in Puducherry and carry with them a religious and cultural significance, especially during the celebration of Vishu festival in Kerala.

“May flowers are also found in plenty on the road sides of Puducherry. The flowering season is from April to May. Apart from these flowers, the season also produces Peltophorum and Cassia flowers,” he added.
