Variety of rituals find expression at expo

PUDUCHERRY: A photography exhibition opened here throws light on a variety of ritualsand multiple cultures across geographical boundaries, from India to Tibet, Thailand to Malaysia, Bali to Laos.

Titled “Celebration,” the exhibition has been organised as part of events scheduled at the Alliance Francaise during April. It was inaugurated on April 4 and will be on till April 13.

The photographs have been taken in Nepal, Tibet, Bali, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and in India, at Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.

For photographer Bruno Onesta, the photographs are an expression of routine to special events, fervent beliefs and practices. “I have taken the photographs over the last five years,” Mr. Onesta said.

The exhibition is built around three themes — collective celebrations, rituals and intimacy.

“The collective celebrations have pictures of large ritual events, space and numerous participants, collective and liberating passions, while the theme of rituals capture persons and gestures in daily practices of rites,” he said.

The Masi Magam at Puducherry, Pongal celebrations in Tamil Nadu, poojas at the temples of Katmandu, Nepal, monks at Buddhist Temples at Bangkok, Thailand, devotees and various forms of offerings find expression through the photographs.

“ A photographer is like a window. He or she should never be outside. You cannot capture the feelings by being outside,” he said.

He was full of praise for the people in India. “The doors are always open to others here. If I am participating in a ritual, people respect me and do not ask if I am a Hindu or Christian. This is very particular to India, people accept you with your difference,” Mr. Onesta said.
