PUDUCHERRY: A cup of white kolam powder stood as if to welcome visitors to the venue of the rangoli competition conducted for students of Government Bharathidasan College for Women on Sunday.

The Home Science Department block was a riot of colours as girls in colourful clothes bent over the space allocated to them. For over an hour the 120 participants drew patterns in chalk and filled in the designs with colour powder to create rangoli patterns.

One could see lotuses, butterflies, fruits and vegetables as well as traditional patterns. One of them had even incorporated the AIDS red ribbon symbol in her kolam. It was as if the chalk lines came to life as the girls filled in pinks, greens, blues, reds, maroons, violets and yellows within the lines. Over the colours they used white kolam powder lines to neatly demarcate the designs.

The girls said they did not mind coming to college on a Sunday as they liked drawing kolams.

The prizes for winners of the competition, organised by the Puduvai Thiruvalluvar Kalai Koodam, would be distributed on January 26. The organisation’s president, S. Sivakumar, said the judges had chosen Sathyavani, a student of III year (CN & D) as ‘Kola Thilakam’ and that she would receive a special prize.

Among the first year students, P. Muthulakshmi (BCS) came first and Kausalya (mathematics) came second. Among the second year students, N. Rajarajeswari (CN& D) came first and Nishanthi (botany) second. Among the third year students, Kamalavarani (computer science) came first and Vanathi (economics) second.
