Kolkata has emerged as a major centre for Odissi dance in India, she says

Senior dancers like me have the responsibility to encourage young dancers

BHUBANESWAR: Kolkata-based Odissi dancer and Guru Aloka Kanungo has announced to host an international festival for young Odissi dancers in Kolkata from November 1 to 3. Aloka, who hails from Orissa, is the founder of Shinjan Nrityalaya, the dance institution that would host the event. “We launched this annual festival last year and it received rave response. Kolkata has emerged as a major centre for Odissi dance in India and the dance form has a large number of connoisseurs here. We thought of having this festival to present the new talents before the Odissi community and connoisseurs of Kolkata,” she said. The young dancers are not only gifted, but they are also quite committed to Odissi as a career, observed Aloka. “Senior dancers like me have the responsibility to encourage them and salute their spirit,” she added.

Odissi dancers in India and abroad in the age group of 18 to 30 are eligible to apply for the festival.
