Students’ Union president’s post goes to ABVP
Ashish Sinha, student of the Patna Law College and candidate of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) was elected the president of the Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU). Anshu Kumari, an M.Com student, contesting from the Left-backed All India Students’ Federation (AISF) platform became the general secretary in a historic election, which took place after nearly three decades.
Mr. Sinha, son of Bharatiya Janana Party MLA Arun Sinha, beat the nearest rival Divya Gautam of Patna College standing from the AISF platform by 168 votes. He secured 1,896 votes against her 1,728 votes.
Except the president’s post, the AISF swept the polls in other posts. In a landslide victory, Ms. Kumari, who showed much promise of winning, polled 2,203 votes trouncing her rival Saif Danish of the Chhatra Rashtriya Janata Dal by a whopping 960 votes. She secured the highest number of votes polled by any candidate in the PUSU polls.
The AISF’s Anshuman, a post-graduate student of ancient Indian history, was elected to the post of vice-president. He defeated his closest rival Abhishek Kumar of ABVP by a slender margin of 79 votes.
While around 18,000 students from different colleges of the University formed the vote base, the overall voting percentage was an estimated 50 per cent in this landmark poll.
