BERHAMPUR: Members of the Ganjam district ‘Soundhik’ Samaj, the traditional caste-based organisation of families involved in liquor trading has demanded the State government to initiate investigation by crime branch to nab the culprits behind the murder of two liquor traders near Sanakusumi village near the city on Sunday.

On Monday the members of this organisation met the Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) and Ganjam district Collector regarding the issue. They alleged that a liquor lobby led by C.H. Bairi Patro was behind this double murder and local police had provided protection to these anti-socials. As per their memorandum which they handed over to the Collector and SP, the deceased Jayaram Sahu and Gangadhar Sahu had met the SP on November 3.

They had submitted a written complaint regarding threat to their life. Yet the police could not save them. The ‘Samaj’ has demanded a compensation of Rs.10 lakh each to the family members of the deceased as they could not be protected by police despite complaints. Police arrested two persons involved in the murder. But the organisation is not satisfied. The members of the organisation have threatened to block the NH-5 near Kanisi on November 21 by burning diyas and holding a Yagna on road if the real culprits behind the double murder were not arrested by then.
