Bus hits stationary autorickshaw

CUTTACK: Tension prevailed for more than one hour at Badambadi bus terminus here on Wednesday evening when it was a “free for all” between the bus drivers and auto drivers who were engaged in a pitched battle after a town bus ran over an autorickshaw, killing one autorickshaw driver and injuring two others.

While the auto drivers caused severe damage to the erring bus and beat up its driver, the bus drivers were planning to retaliate, sources said adding that tension is prevailing at the site. City DCP Rekha Lohani along with many senior police officials are now camping at the bus terminus keeping a watch on the situation.

Meanwhile, the city auto drivers association has called for an auto strike on Thursday, while the condition of the injured now undergoing treatment at SCB medical college and hospital are stated to be serious.

According to eye witnesses, the speeding town bus ran over the auto rickshaw that was parked on the side of the road at Pala Mandap area of the bus terminus. The auto driver along with two of his fellow drivers was taking tea at the roadside tea stall at that time, sources said. It was learnt that the bus driver was in an inebriated condition.
