UGC-ASC's 100 {+t} {+h} and 101 {+s} {+t} orientation courses inaugurated

“India needs a pool of lateral thinkers, researchers and emerging entrepreneurs”

PUDUCHERRY: The Academic Staff College (ASC) of Pondicherry University ranks seventh among all ASCs in the country as per the ratings of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

There are a total of 66 ASCs across the country. The ASC of Pondicherry University stood at third position among ASCs at Central universities. “In the UGC ratings, the ASC is within the top 10 ASCs in the country. We are in the seventh place,” Director of Culture and Cultural Relations of the university A. Balasubramanian said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the 100 {+t} {+h} and 101 {+s} {+t} orientation courses organised by the UGC-ASC of the university on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the two orientation courses, Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli R.T. Sabapathy Mohan pointed out that the 19 {+t} {+h} century belonged to England, 20 {+t} {+h} century to the U.S. and 21 {+s} {+t} century was meant for Indians and Chinese.

“We have to see how to seize the demographic opportunity. Europe and the U.S. are greying in old age. In India, more than 60 per cent of persons are below 25 years. The responsibility is much more on the shoulders of young teachers,” he said.

Calling for a vision and ways to achieve it, the Vice-Chancellor said Indians should compete with the Chinese, who were hardworking when compared to Indians. “India needs a pool of lateral thinkers, researchers and emerging entrepreneurs,” he said.

Asserting that the educational system in India was fully equipped to meet challenges and achieve the vision, he exhorted the teachers to look at ways to convert rural students, who are uni-dimensional, to multi-dimensional and bring in value additions to their personality within the education system.

Professor Balasubramanian said all teachers in colleges and universities are subjected to the knowledge explosion.

“The role of teachers will be multifaceted. The role of teachers should be exemplary so that in future India becomes a superpower silently,” he said. He called for inculcating multi-modal teaching practices so that teachers create their own styles.

Director of UGC-ASC of the university S. Hariharan said the new exclusive building for ASC along with guesthouse and office will be inaugurated shortly.

Finance Officer of the university S. Raghavan and Reader of UGC-ASC P. Ramalingam spoke.
