The Trinamool Congress leadership is mistaken if it thinks that by causing a fracture in one’s vertebrae it will be able to break the spinal column of the Leftists, said Leader of the Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra on Thursday.

He said the Left is strong enough to withstand all such assaults. He was speaking at a rally organised by the South 24 Parganas district committee of the Left Front at Bhangar. Abdur Rezzak Molla presided over it. He was discharged less than a week ago from hospital after a local Trinamool Congress leader and his associates assaulted him in the same area last month. He had suffered a fracture in his vertebrae in the incident.

It is not only that leaders and workers of the Left parties are being attacked across the State, Dr. Mishra, said, adding: “Those of the Trinamool Congress were also being attacked [in intra-party clashes] as were those of the Congress. Policemen are being killed [referring to the murder of a sub-inspector in the city earlier this week] and the media too is being attacked”.

“Even before the completion of a third of its term the Chief Minister had claimed on completion of 100 days in power that her government had completed sometimes 90 per cent, sometimes 99 per cent of the work it had set itself at the start. If that were so, there is not much more to expect from it. On the completion of two years she may say that 110 per cent of the work has been done!” Dr. Mishra said.

“We live in a State run by a sari-clad Hitler”, said Mr. Molla referring to Ms. Banerjee “whose party is one of goondas and anti-socials” and is served by “extortionists”.

Alleging that the attack on him was an attempted murder, he said it was a design of the ruling party to bring under its control a region that has been electing MLAs and panchayat members of the Left parties over the past years.
