RSP claims that its steel was used in the rocket that launched the PSLV C-7 into orbit recently

BHUBANESWAR: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on Thursday claimed that its special quality steel was used in the indigenously built rocket that launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-7 into orbit from the Sriharikota Space Centre recently.

"Plates used in the four stages of the rocket were rolled and processed in the RSP's Plate Mill and were supplied to MIDHANI (Misra Dhatu Nigam Limited, Hyderabad)," a company release said.

It said that after fabrication, assembly and further ageing treatment at MIDHANI, these plates were despatched to Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. "It is noteworthy that Maraging Steel is one of the strongest and toughest steel with a tensile strength beyond 200 kg per sq mm. Plates used in the launching of rockets need to be very tough and resilient since huge amount of stresses develop during the launching process," the company said, adding that it was significant that RSP was the only plant in Asia to process such plates. Annually, RSP despatches some 50 to 60 plates to MIDHANI.
