PUDUCHERRY: The play areas in Bharathi Park, popular among tourists, are in need of immediate attention.
Most of the play equipment in the park’s two play areas are old and in bad shape, though children continue to play here.
The jungle gym and swings are broken, rusted and unsafe for use.
The landing ends of some slides are also broken. Plastic seats have jagged edges, which could hurt the children. Ropes of the scramble net are cut, making it useless.
“The park is not well-maintained,” said S.B. Das, who brought his child to the park for the first time. “Most things here are broken, and could be dangerous for children. Also, there should be enough sand on the ground, especially in the landing areas so that children do not get hurt.
This must be checked often,” he stressed.
A pile of garbage was also noticed near the park’s entrance next to the V.O.C. Pillai statue.
Officials of the Puducherry Municipality, which is in charge of the maintenance of the park, said that a proposal for new play equipment was on the cards.
All the rusted and broken equipment would be replaced by equipment made of cement at an estimated cost of about Rs. 3 lakh.
As soon as the funds are released, work would begin at the park, the officials said.
