Police suspect involvement of a Nigerian national

A highly decomposed body of an unindentified woman was found stuffed in a travel bag under mysterious circumstances in Uttam Nagar here on Friday. The police suspect involvement of a Nigerian national who had taken the house on rent about three months ago.

The incident came to light around 4-30 p.m. when Gurdev Singh went to check on his tenant and noticed foul smell emanating from the house. “The first-floor house was locked from outside for the past 15 days,” said a police officer.

Suspecting that something was amiss, the landlord alerted the police who broke open the door and found the body of a woman stuffed in a large bag. “It was decomposed, beyond recognition. It appears that the woman was murdered over a fortnight ago. However, the post-mortem report will throw light on the exact cause of death,” said a police officer.

Enquiries from the landlord, who lives in a nearby house and his sister lives on the ground floor of the building where the incident took place, revealed that the flat was taken on rent by Innocent Nwayo in February.

Innocent had come to India last October. The police have found a photocopy of his passport lying in the flat along with his other belongings.

Although the landlord had not got his antecedent verified by the local police, he kept the Foreigners Regional Registration Office informed about Innocent.

“He has a receipt from FRRO for the month of April. We are trying to get a photograph of the suspect from FRRO,” said the officer.

A murder case has been registered at the Uttam Nagar police station and efforts are under way to ascertain the whereabouts of the Nigerian national or any of his acquaintances through whom they can track him down.
