A policeman was assaulted by over half-a-dozen miscreants when he attempted to overpower them while they were beating up the brother of a young woman they had molested at New Ashok Nagar in East Delhi on Monday night. One of the accused has been arrested.

The incident took place when the woman (21) and her brother (25) were passing through B-Block of New Ashok Nagar in their car around 10.30 p.m.

“They were near Eastend Apartments when the miscreants misbehaved with the woman,” said a police officer.

The miscreants, some of whom were seated in a car and the others were standing close to a liquor shop, passed some lewd remarks at the woman. Her brother then stopped the car and objected to their misdemeanour. An altercation ensued, following which the culprits attacked him. When his sister tried to intervene, they assaulted her too.

Passersby raised an alarm, hearing which area beat constable Mohit rushed to the spot and tried to intervene. The miscreants, who were allegedly in an inebriated state, attacked him too. He, however, managed to overpower one culprit, while the others fled. The accused has been identified as Neeraj (19).

The police have registered a case of molestation and assault. A separate case of assaulting and obstructing a public servant from discharge of duty has been registered on the constable’s complaint.
