NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old woman ended up delivering her baby outside the Maternity and Child Care Centre of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi at Jwala Vihar in West Delhi on Monday night.

According to MCD officials, Babita, who was anaemic, had visited the centre on Monday morning for a check-up and then returned the same night without her medical card.

As no doctor is present on duty 24 hours at the centre, the doctor on call duty was summoned.

In the meantime, the patient’s husband, Suresh, who was asked to return home and fetch the patient’s medical card, refused to do so and called up the police. The patient meanwhile had entered labour and delivered the baby outside the centre.

Denying allegations that the woman was turned away from the centre at night, MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said: “The doctor on call duty who lives 2.5 km away rushed to the centre and facilitated the delivery. The mother and the child are fine now.”

However, MCD Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
