Police suspect it to be a case of attempted "honour killing"

NEW DELHI: A young woman, her boyfriend and his friend were shot at and injured allegedly by her brother, cousins and their accomplices at Punjabi Bagh in West Delhi when they were on their way to get married on Monday. While the victims were stated to be out of danger, the police suspect it to be a case of attempted "honour killing".

According to the police, it all happened on Ring Road around 1-30 p.m. when 20-year-old Raj Rani, Bhupender (25), and his friends Brahm Prakash (23) and Sunil (19) were travelling in a Tata Indica car. A Hyundai Accent car intercepted the Indica and five men alighted from it. They entered into an altercation with Bhupender, asking Raj to come with them.

After a brief scuffle, the assailants allegedly fired a few rounds at the four and fled away from the scene. Raj was hit in the head, while Bhupender sustained injuries in the chest and Brahm Prakash sustained bullet injury in the hand. Sunil escaped unhurt.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi) Robin Hibu, the injured were taken to ESI Hospital. Raj and Bhupender were later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital, while Brahm Prakash was kept under observation at ESI Hospital.

"They are all in a stable condition," said Mr. Hibu later, adding that efforts were being made to track down all the accused.

Enquiries by the police revealed that Bhupender, who is engaged in the cable business, and Raj, who is pursuing her second year of graduation through an open university, were having an affair for the past several months. She met him during a visit to her aunt's place at Bawana and they came close to each other.

Raj reportedly recently sought her family's permission to marry Bhupender, but they did not approve of it purportedly due to similarities in the "gotra".

However, Raj continued to see Bhupender. Around 9-30 a.m. on Monday, Raj slipped out of the house through the backdoor and met Bhupender. The duo decided to get married. In the meantime, Raj's mother discovered that she was not at home and raised an alarm informing other relatives about her elopement.

Subsequently, it is alleged that Raj's brother, cousins and their accomplices tracked them down and opened fire following a scuffle with Bhupender and his friends. A case of attempt-to-murder has been registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station and police teams have been despatched to different parts of North-West Delhi in search of the accused.
