In Dara Singh fake encounter case
A special court here on Tuesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Rajasthan's Additional Director-General of Police A.K. Jain and Additional SP Arshad Ali in the Dara Singh fake encounter case. The court action follows a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which is probing the alleged encounter killing which had taken place on October 23, 2006.
The CBI had on Sunday arrested Inspector-General of Police (State Crime Records Bureau) A. Ponnuchamy, who was the then SP of the State's Special Operations Group (SOG) which carried out the encounter in a Jaipur suburb. Mr. Jain and Mr. Ali are also accused in the case. As it was done in the case of Mr. Ponnuchamy the CBI had called Mr. Jain also to its office on Sunday for questioning but the latter dodged arrest by not appearing. Mr. Ali has been on leave for some time.
Five in custody
So far five police officers have been taken into custody in the case.
The court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate issued the arrest warrants against the police officers after the CBI made a request pleading that as in the case of Mr. Ponnuchamy, the other two were needed for questioning. The agency has taken permission from the Director General of Rajasthan Police for the same and issued notice to them, it told the court.
Mr. Ponnuchamy, who is in CBI remand, will be produced in the court on Wednesday.
The CBI told the court that Mr. Jain did not turn up for questioning when he was called and there was a likelihood that he would try to escape arrest.
A desolate Mr. Ponnuchamy, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday in custody, faces suspension as per service rules after remaining in custody for 48 hours.
