New Delhi: An alleged carjacker, carrying a reward of Rs.25,000 on his head, managed to give police the slip here on Saturday morning.

Manoj Bakkarwala, wanted in more than 30 cases of carjacking across the Capital, was intercepted by a police team and was asked to surrender, police said on Sunday. He and some of his associates, who were travelling in a SUV, however, opened fire at the police. Police fired 10 rounds in retaliation, they said.

Bakkarwala managed to flee from the scene with the vehicle, which was later found abandoned around 10 km from the encounter site.

A case was registered against Bakkarwala under relevant section of the IPC in this regard.

Last month, Delhi Police had arrested four members of his gang for their alleged involvement in vehicle theft cases. Earlier, Bakkarwala had managed to escape from custody while he was being taken by Haryana Police to the Tis Hazari courts here. He has been absconding since then. — PTI
