A Pawan Hans helicopter hired by the Punjab government crashed on Thursday at the Chandigarh airport immediately after take off. The pilot and his deputy suffered minor injuries. At least four fire tenders were used to douse the flames. The rescue team had to break the window panes to pull out the pilot, S.P.S. Brar, and the co-pilot, M.S. Brar. Both were rushed to the Western Command hospital, where the doctors declared them to be “out of danger.”While the cause for the mishap was not known, the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The helicopter was proceeding towards Rajendra Park, opposite to the official residence of the Chief Minister. It was scheduled to ferry Minister for Local Bodies and Industries Manoranjan Kalia to Mukerian as he was to officiate as Chief Minister in the absence of Parkash Singh Badal, who is in the United States due to the illness of his wife. Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Singh, also left for the U. S. on Wednesday.
