Delhi BJP President Vijender Gupta was on Friday granted bail in a defamation case filed against him by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in a court here amid much drama.

Metropolitan Magistrate Saumya Chouhan granted bail to Mr. Gupta on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 15,000 with one surety of like amount, after his appearance in court in response to the summons issued to him.

Exemption plea

Following Ms. Dikshit’s counsel Mehmood Pracha moving an application seeking exemption for her from personal appearance, Mr. Gupta’s lawyers contested this application. They said she was the complainant and hence had to be present in court.

The lawyers also alleged that Ms. Dikshit’s 15-page statement recorded as pre-summoning evidence was “suspicious”. The court allowed the Chief Minister’s exemption application.
