NEW DELHI: Veteran journalist S. Venkatesh, former Special Representative of The Statesman, died here on Sunday morning after a brief illness. He was 74.
Mr. Venkatesh began his career with The Hindustan Times and moved to The Statesman in the early 1960s. He served that newspaper for more than three decades till his retirement. Moving up from the city reporting section, he became its Chief Reporter and then Special Representative in Srinagar before returning to the New Delhi news bureau where he covered Parliament and various Union Ministries. In an era where personal by-lines were rare, he stood out with many scintillating news stories. He is survived by a son and a daughter. The cremation took place on Sunday afternoon.
