NEW DELHI: In a bizarre accident, a three-year-old boy was killed and his aunt injured when a Toyota Qualis allegedly being driven by a minor boy hit them at Paschim Vihar here on Tuesday night. While the boy has been detained, the car driver who allowed him to drive has been arrested.
The accident took place around 9-15 p.m. when Pushpa (32) along with her nephew Vivek was on her way to attend the Janmashtami celebrations at Sanatan Dharm Mandir in Miyanwali. When she neared the temple, the Toyota Qualis allegedly being driven by a 12-year-old boy living in the neighbourhood hit her from behind. Vivek, who was in Pushpa’s arms, fell on the road and died on the spot from head injuries.
Pushpa suffered injuries in the legs and was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. The police rounded up the boy and the car driver, Deepak, who was on the front passenger seat when the accident took place. During interrogation, Deepak told the police that he had allowed the boy to drive the vehicle.
Subsequently the police registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving and arrested the driver. He was, however, later released on bail. The police are planning to refer the case of the minor boy to the juvenile justice board.
According to the police, the Toyota Qualis was the only source of livelihood for the boy’s father who runs a taxi service.
Enquiries revealed that Vivek’s parents live at Bhind in Madhya Pradesh. His aunt Pushpa had recently brought him to Delhi as she did not have a child of her own.
His body was handed over to his relatives after post-mortem on Wednesday afternoon.
