Had arrived in the Capital with an NRI friend on February 2

A 37-year-old US national allegedly tried to jump from the departure ramp of Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Thursday. He has been charged with attempt to suicide.

Redmond Tyrone climbed the ramp near the departure Gate No. 8 around 8-30 a.m. and threatened to jump. He did not relent even after several hours of persuasion and made a vain bid to jump around noon. Alert security personnel caught him in the nick of time and took him into custody.

According to the police, Tyrone had come to the Capital along with a non-resident Indian friend Nilesh Patel on February 2 and the two then went to Gujarat.

Both returned to Delhi on Tuesday as Tyrone was scheduled to catch a flight back to the US the next day. Nilesh, who had come see Tyrone off, returned the same day.

But Tyrone reported late at the airlines counter on Wednesday afternoon and was not allowed to board the flight. When airlines staff asked Tyrone about his luggage, he realised that his friend had taken all his baggage with him.

“Tyrone had to spend the whole night at the departure lounge. But this morning as soon as he got the opportunity, he rushed out and attempted to jump from the ramp,” said a senior police officer.

The police said that there were differences in the versions of Tyrone and Nilesh and suspect it to be a case of two men being in love with the same woman.
