After fighting a legal battle for over 26 years to recover service dues, Champalal Gupta, one of the 632 employees of the infamous Union Carbide company, has given up hope and threatened self-immolation on January 26.
“We got just three months' salary after the factory was closed (following the toxic gas leak in December 1984 in which thousands of people were killed),” Gupta told PTI.
“The permanent employees were entitled to get 75 months' salary, ranging between Rs.4.5 lakh to 7 lakh, but I got a mere Rs.8,000,” he said.
“I have now given up all hopes after fighting a long legal battle. I have decided to immolate myself on the Republic Day,” 65-year-old Gupta said.
