A young man and his teenaged friend have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police for allegedly attempting to extort Rs.30 lakh from his former employer in Gandhi Nagar here.

The garments businessman recently lodged a complaint with the Anti-Extortion Cell of Crime Branch saying that he had received an anonymous call on his mobile phone demanding Rs.30 lakh and threatening to kill his son if the demand was not met.

The complainant further told the police that the caller had also damaged the windscreen of his car.

On January 8, the extortionist again contacted the businessman on his mobile phone and directed him to come near a cremation ground in Geeta Colony with the money.

The police laid a trap and arrested two persons when they came on a motorcycle to collect the money. The two were later identified as Suraj (20) and Gaurav (19). Both the accused are residents of Sonia Vihar. An air pistol and two mobile phones used in commission of the crime were also allegedly seized at their instance.

During interrogation, Suraj purportedly told the police that he needed money to tide over a financial crisis and hatched a plan along with Gaurav to extort money from his former employer. Suraj had worked at the garments shop of the complainant for over five years before quitting it in 2007. He had then opened a dairy products shop.Suraj promised to pay Gaurav Rs.2 lakh if the plan went through, the police said.

The two bought an air pistol for Rs.2,200 from Sadar Bazar to threaten the businessman, the police said.

They also used the weapon to fire a shot at the windscreen of the complainant's car in order to scare him.
