Two persons allegedly on the run with diamonds, which they tricked a diamond dealer into handing over to them, have been arrested here.
Deepak and Ravi Raj Gupta alias Basu Bhai allegedly used an online portal to find the contact details of their potential targets, the police said.
In June, diamond merchant Binu Jain approached the police and told them that he was contacted by one Basu Bhai, who requested him to visit his South Extension office and show him some diamonds, which he wanted for his client.
“Mr. Jain went to Basu Bhai’s office with the diamonds — one four carat KSI-1, one three carat 3.51; ESI-2; five pieces pear shape 0.95 carat; one Blue Sapphire 4.63. Basu Bhai asked him to give him the diamonds as he had to show them to his brother sitting in another room in the same office,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways) S.B.S Tyagi. Basu Bhai then proceeded to flee with the diamonds from the back gate of the office.
During the course of investigation, the police received information that one Deepak would come to Britannia Chowk, from where he would go to Karol Bagh, to sell a diamond in November.
The police laid a trap and arrested Deepak on November 24, who was purportedly found in possession of a diamond.
At his instance, Basu Bhai was arrested from Shakurpur.
The police later recovered six more diamonds at Basu Bhai’s instance from his hometown Kolkata.
According to the police, the total cost of the recovered diamonds is close to Rs.50 lakh.
“During interrogation, the duo revealed that Deepak was involved in more than 26 cases of theft and burglary in the past and had met Basu Bhai in jail, where they became friends and planned to cheat diamonds jewellers,” said Mr. Tyagi.
He added that Basu Bhai, a goldsmith, could evaluate the diamonds with ease.
