Women have a special place of pride and honour in India and they harmonise the roles of mothers, daughters, sisters, wives and partners with great resilience, said Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar here on Tuesday.
She was speaking at the Shrimati Indrani Devi Centenary Lecture organised by Indian Institute of Public Administration.
Ms. Kumar paid tribute to the immense contribution of “unseen and unsung work” of Indian women in the freedom struggle. She also spoke about her mother Indrani Devi's courage during the days of the British Raj.
The Speaker further said that women have been working to build networking and support groups for poverty reduction, economic growth, conflict resolution, peace making efforts and civil society strengthening for a more secure, sustainable world. She added that women need to affirm that they are not just powerless victims of conflict situations, but are in the forefront for peace building and conflict resolving efforts.
