The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has criticised Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for being silent on a surprise check conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation at the VAT Department office here in coordination with the State Government’s vigilance unit.

The CBI had conducted searches at the trade tax office suspecting that undervalued challans had been issued by some department officials.

Expressing concern, CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal on Saturday demanded that the Chief Minister, who is also the Finance Minister, should order a high level probe into the matter. “While traders are being harassed by VAT officials, the government has maintained silence and no cognisance has been taken of the matter”, he said.

The CAIT said the government should not try to pull curtains on such a grave issue.
