Caught taking bribe for promoting a student to next class

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Wednesday sentenced a school teacher to three years in prison for seeking a bribe of Rs. 3,000 from a man for promoting his son to the next class even after the student got compartment in two subjects.

Special Judge A. S. Yadav awarded the prison term to M. P. Singh besides imposing a fine of Rs. 60,000, holding him guilty under Prevention of Corruption Act.

No leniency

The court refused to show leniency to Singh who was working as English teacher at Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya in Kashmere Gate here. “His job was to impart education to students.

He was to act as a role model for the students but he himself acted in a manner unbecoming of a teacher. What message he was conveying to the future generation? That even if you fail in examinations, you can be promoted by giving bribe?” the court said.

Singh was apprehended by Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths while taking the bribe amount from Mr. Shiv Kumar. - PTI
