NEW DELHI: The Union Urban Development Ministry on Monday notified the constitution of a three-member Technical Committee comprising sitting Members of Parliament Ajay Maken and Vijay Kumar Malhotra and former Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejinder Khanna to look into the issue of illegal buildings and constructions, violation of building by-laws and ways and means to regularise lakhs of structures.

It is learnt that Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy conveyed the constitution of the new Committee to the Delhi Government.

DPCC president Ram Babu Sharma had also met Mr. Reddy on Monday and sought notification of the new committee by Tuesday so as to find a way to amicably resolve the matter.

Although the terms and references of the Committee had not been notified as yet, they are likely to be conveyed to the Delhi Government later this week.

The Committee had been formed after demands by the party and the Delhi Government that in view of the changed situation and massive violation of building by-laws, it was pertinent to study the situation and suggest what best could be done to deal with it.

The nomination of Mr. Malhotra, a sitting BJP member from South Delhi, has taken many by surprise. A majority of the Congressmen are of the view that Mr. Malhotra is known to offer dissent in all matters and will also rob the Congress of the chance of taking credit for the Committee's work.

"On the other hand, the inclusion of Mr. Maken, the one-time blue-eyed boy but now an archrival of Ms. Dikshit, has also not gone down well with the Chief Minister's camp.

However, the inclusion of Mr. Khanna, a seasoned bureaucrat and known for his visionary approach, has been welcomed. This Committee is also expected to interact with the committee of officials constituted by the Delhi Government.
