Three persons were killed and one sustained injuries when an under-construction building collapsed in Nihal Vihar here on Tuesday.

The multi-storey building in Chandra Vihar, an unauthorised colony, in West Delhi came crashing down around 4 p.m. following which the locals informed the police and the fire brigade. The owner of the building, Nirmal Singh (50), mason Harbhajan Singh (40) and labourer Mohan Lal (40) were pulled out from the debris and taken to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead. Later, another labourer Daya Ram (30) was also pulled out and was admitted to a hospital in an injured condition.

A Delhi Fire Service official said that they received a call about the collapse at 4-20 p.m. following which five fire tenders were sent to the spot.

Additional Commissioner of Police (West) V. Renganathan said: “As per Daya Ram there were four persons inside the building including him when it collapsed. As all four have been accounted for we do not expect more people under the debris. A clearing operation is underway at the spot.”

A case has been registered at the Nihal Vihar police station. Meanwhile, MCD Commissioner K.S. Mehra has directed the area Deputy Commissioner to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report within three days. Senior municipal officials also visited the spot and pressed its staff into the rescue operation.
