Four persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of an octogenarian woman in her house in Rani Bagh here this past month.

The accused have been identified as Vinod alias Sanjay (25), Karan (21), Mukesh (21) and Mukesh alias Lamboo (21). Prime accused, Vinod, was staying on rent in the victim's multi-storey house.

Eighty-five-year-old Maya Devi was found strangulated to death in her room on the first floor of the building by her grandson Arvind, a grocery shop owner, on October 27 morning. A DVD player and earrings of the woman were missing and a “chunni” used in commission of murder was found lying near the body.

The police arrested the accused on November 9 following a tip-off. During interrogation, Vinod purportedly told the police that he saw the elderly woman's son Ram Bhulaya counting money one day and hatched a conspiracy along with his friends to commit robbery. As per the plan, the four entered the woman's room on November 26 night and tried to take off her earrings. But the woman woke up and raised an alarm. Fearing that they might be caught, the four tied up her legs and hands and strangulated her.

The stolen DVD has been recovered, the police said.
