Telecom giants Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Loop Mobile have been issued summons by a court here for allegedly rejecting number portability requests from subscribers in violation of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India regulations.
TRAI moved the court after unsatisfactory replies by the companies in response to show-cause notices by the regulator. The three companies and their senior executives will have to appear on May 25 before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav.
“In my considered opinion, there is enough material on record to proceed against the accused persons for offence punishable under Section 29 of TRAI Act for violation of Regulation 12 of the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations. Let accused persons be summoned,” the CMM said.
After allowing number portability, TRAI had directed all service providers to furnish compliance of various provisions of the Telecom Portability Regulations.
TRAI counsel Saket Singh told the Court that the regulator had examined data pertaining to porting requests and had found “certain requests had been illegally rejected”.
