Senior Indian Administrative Service officer V. S. Singh died here on Monday when a speeding car hit him near his official residence while he was returning from the Central Park situated nearby after a morning walk. He was rushed to Sawai Man Singh Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries after about two hours.

Mr. Singh, 57, was serving as the Additional Chief Secretary (Forest & Environment). He is survived by his wife and two married daughters, Ekta and Ankita. His cremation will take place at Lal Kothi crematorium here on Tuesday.

According to the police sources, Mr. Singh, accompanied by Additional Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) Vijendra Singh, was crossing the road when a car lost balance and hit them. The driver of the car has been arrested and the vehicle seized. Mr. Vijendra Singh was also injured in the accident and his condition was stated to be serious.

An IAS officer of the 1978 batch, Mr. Singh was earlier Chairman of the State Pollution Control Board and served as Principal Secretary in the departments such as home, water resources, sports & youth affairs, labour and forest.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who was on a visit to Nathdwara, came back to Jaipur by the State plane on being informed about the accident and went straight to S.M.S. Hospital. Doctors at the hospital, who tried their best to save him, could not succeed because of excessive bleeding.

S.M.S. Hospital Medical Superintendent Virendra Singh said Mr. Singh was brought in a “very critical” condition and could not be saved despite the best efforts of senior physicians and surgeons.

Mr. Singh’s death has come as a major jolt to the Central Bureau of Investigation in the infamous Dara Singh encounter case, as he was scheduled to depose as a prosecution witness in the court shortly.

Governor Margaret Alva, Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, Pradesh Congress Committee president Chandrabhan, BJP State president Arun Chaturvedi, Forest & Environment Minister Bina Kak, Medical & Health Minister A. A. Khan and Assembly Speaker Deependra Singh Shekhawat have condoled the untimely death of Mr. Singh.
