KSU, Youth Congress to continue stir

Sonia informed of settlement of

Aryadan issue

NEW DELHI: The Congress leadership in Kerala on Thursday urged Congress president Sonia Gandhi to take a decision on the rehabilitation of supporters of veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran in the party’s organisational set-up at the earliest.

Briefing mediapersons after meeting Ms. Gandhi along with Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy here, Mr. Chennithala stressed the need for the intervention of the high command in this regard.

He said since it involved appointments in the KPCC, it needed the clearance of the All India Congress Committee.

Given the tight balancing act that the rehabilitation would require — as there are Karunakaran-baiters within the State unit of the party, Mr. Chennithala said none of the existing office-bearers in the organisational structure would be affected while accommodating loyalists of the former Chief Minister.

They informed Ms. Gandhi that the Kerala Students Union and the Youth Congress would continue their agitation against the Class VII social science textbook till it was withdrawn. Details of the stir over the controversial textbook were communicated to Ms. Gandhi.

The two leaders also submitted an organisational report to Ms. Gandhi in which they informed her about the amicable settlement of the war of words that had broken out between Congress leader Aryadan Mohammad and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key constituent of the Congress-led UDF.

Mr. Chennithala said the Congress president expressed satisfaction over the settlement of the controversy with the IUML.
