The Union Government has sanctioned projects for production of 925 MW power from solar energy in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan in a bid to tap the vast potential of this sector. Jaisalmer alone can supply power to the entire country by exploiting solar energy available throughout the year.
Stating this while laying the foundation stone for a Grid sub-station at Shahpura near here over the weekend, State Energy Minister Jitendra Singh said Rajasthan would shortly achieve self-sufficiency in the power sector and use solar energy for the benefit of remote and inaccessible areas. “The Centre's support in the power sector is invaluable for us,” he said.
Mr. Singh said his department would install one 33-KV Grid sub-station for every three village panchayats and had so far established 800 of 1,100 sanctioned sub-stations. Besides, the process for appointment of 18,000 electrical engineers is under way for bringing about reforms in the power sector.
The Minister said the Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendras opened at village panchayats were providing essential services to the rural populace. “Very soon these Seva Kendras would emerge as mini-secretariats of village panchayats,” he said while asking the villagers to take full benefit from them.
