NEW DELHI: After lying low for almost a week, the ongoing sealing drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has once again gained momentum with sealing squads on Thursday targeting almost 400 illegal commercial establishments operating from residential areas.
The drive is likely to be further intensified in the coming days so that the sealing exercise could be completed soon and the civic body could resume the demolition drive that has been suspended for lack of manpower and resources.
During the MCD drive carried out in 10 civic zones, properties of Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag's cousin Vinod Sehwag at Najafgarh, and of the Leader of the Opposition in MCD, Subhash Arya, at Paharganj were also sealed.
While illegal commercial activities were going on from the basement, first and second floors of Vinod Sehwag's house that were sealed, Mr. Arya's ground floor shop, which he claimed was lying unused for the past couple of years, was also sealed.
Other places where sealing took place included New Rohtak Road, Pusa Road, Rani Jhansi Road, Shahdara, Madhuban, Shakarpur, Vikas Marg, Mehrauli, Malviya Nagar, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, the stretch between Outer Ring Road and Navada, between Mall Road and Chattrasal Stadium, Badarpur to Mathura Road, Najafgarh to Kakrola, and Road No.33 from Ring Road to Begampur.
The MCD squads also carried out a de-sealing exercise giving relief to traders who have pledged to remove their commercial establishments before June 30. A total of 320 shops were de-sealed in eight civic zones.
