NEW DELHI: The Congress candidate from East Delhi parliamentary constituency, Sandeep Dikshit, on Sunday addressed a meeting of party workers at Jasola Vihar in the Okhla Assembly constituency.

Addressing the workers, Mr. Dikshit said that he believes that he is first a worker of the party and then a candidate. He urged the workers to go from door to door to inform the people about the various development works undertaken by the Congress Governments.

Praising the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, Mr. Dikshit said under the leadership of party president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh loans worth Rs. 72,000 crore have been waived off for the farmers and the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission have been implemented.

At a more down to earth level, he said, the Congress does not believe in the politics of caste and religion and instead takes everyone along on the path to an all-round development. As for the constituency, he said East Delhi was developing into a beautiful place and the staging of the Commonwealth Games here would bring it at par with the best of areas across the world.

The meeting was addressed by Okhla MLA and All-India Congress Committee secretary Pervez Hashmi and former Badarpur MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri.

Mr. Hashmi expressed confidence that Mr. Dikshit would win by the maximum margin in the Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Bidhuri said under the leadership of Ms. Dikshit the unauthorised colonies of Delhi have been regularised and crores of rupees have been spent on the development of these colonies.

Besides this, he said, the Delhi Government has also extended the Lal Dora of the villages in Delhi and it has exempted them from house tax thereby benefiting lakhs of people in Delhi. As for the Okhla Assembly segment, he said it has been brought on the Delhi Metro map through the construction of the Central Secretariat-Badarpur line and the Ganga water supply has also been started in this area.
