Seeking to bring the impasse between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) to an end, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday instructed the Municipal Commissioner to release the salary of all the employees by Tuesday.

Directing the Commissioner to end the dispute in an amicable manner, the Chief Minister said all the employees should be given their rightful dues. On the other hand, Ms. Dikshit also urged the sanitation workers to render all their support in maintaining cleanliness in the city during the Commonwealth Games.

Ms. Dikshit issued the directions to MCD when a delegation led by MLA and national general secretary of Rashtriya Safai Mazdoor Congress Vir Singh Dhingan, and comprising her Parliamentary Secretary Surender Kumar and former MLA C.S. Kandera called on her to apprise her of the grievances of the safai karamcharis.

Harassment alleged

The delegation said these workers were being subjected to harassment by the MCD which has withheld their salary and refused to regularise the services of a large number of them despite their putting in long years of service.

While telling the MCD to give due consideration to the demand of regularisation, Ms. Dikshit also directed the Corporation to set up a welfare fund for these employees.
