Sonam’s collection, inspired by nomads, revisits the Silk Route

Fashion designer Sonam Dubal has derived inspiration from the nomads for his latest collection unfolding at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week-2009 in the Capital this Thursday.

Describing his collection as a tribute to the modern day nomad, Sonam says it offers glimpses of the many lives of the many worlds. “Reminiscent of the Silk Route, the textile, print, play of colours and charming silhouettes including Indo-oriental coats, jackets, boleros, wraps, dresses and tunics, seek to recreate moments of Eastern elegance.”

Pointing out that human beings have been nomads from the very beginning, Sonam says the nomads live by walking through great plains, telling stories that link many cultures. “From generation to generation, nomads have merged their life experiences into weaves, embroidery, jewellery and objects in all corners of the many worlds. In sync with the ebb and flow of life’s many moods, they carry both the past and the present within.”

Sonam says that in tune with the Universe, the nomads’ life is filled with the richness of experience, where both joy and pain co-exist. “From the plains of Central Asia, to the plateaus of Tibet, contemporary design is never restricted to one culture or form. It is a composite of exposure, of textile and of imagination. I have presented an authentic and aesthetic amalgamation of an enriched Asian heritage that enjoys complete synergy on a global platform.”

A 1990 graduate of fashion design from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, he began working with the late Rohit Khosla. Thereafter he enjoyed an eight-year rich exploratory journey in theatre design and advertising, while enriching his creative experience.

In 1999, Sonam returned to mainstream fashion with the launch of his label “Sanskar”. His cultural background is responsible for the creation of his signature style that emotes a sensitive fusion of Eastern traditions, with Western aesthetics giving rise to silhouettes that are Pan-Asian in essence.

The label “Sonam Dubal” enjoys a presence in reputed stores around the world.
