Postal bomb

India Post has raised Speed Post charges from October 1 by as much as 60 per cent. The tariff for non-local postal articles weighing up to 50 gm has shot up from Rs.25 to Rs.40, and for local postal articles up to 50 gm it is up from Rs.12 to Rs.17.

This huge hike will force many people to switch over to private couriers, who in turn might raise their charges. The new Speed Post tariffs are doubly illogical with the authorities retaining the policy of charging less for additional weight slabs, something that causes a great deal of confusion.

In its own interest India Post should review its decision at once and go in for a reasonable tariff rather than a wholly unreasonable increase that would prove counter-productive. It can even earn increased revenue by adopting a “One Nation One Tariff” formula for Speed Post just as it does for ordinary postal services. The local and non-local Speed Post tariff should be reasonably uniform for every 50 gm weight slab or part thereof.

Chilling

A chill went down my spine upon seeing the front page photograph in The Hindu (“ A cry from the sole ,” September 13) depicting the sorry condition of the jal satyagraha protestors in Harda district of Madhya Pradesh. It shows the price the villagers have had to pay for acceptance of their demand by the Madhya Pradesh Government.

Mihir Shah’s article the same day (“ Bill for the land gives true value ”) was timely and appropriate in the light of the recent happenings.

The Government should waste no time and there should be no second thoughts about bringing the Right to Fair Compensation & Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation & Resettlement Act replacing the age-old, colonial Land Acquisition Act, 1894.

A century and more

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s 100th achievement was marked by the launch of PSLV-C21. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with a number of dignitaries was a witness to this proud moment and also to the joy on the faces of the people behind the feat. I couldn’t help wondering if this landmark event made our young talents think about the career path they want to choose: high salary packages or a chance to improve the lot of the country?

There are so many fields waiting to be explored. As Shakespeare put it, “To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first.” So let’s just take the first right step and we’ll be on top of the mountain.

Where is my bill?

I have not received my water bill for the past three months, because of which I could not pay the charges for this period. Unfortunately I will be asked to pay penalty/interest on this amount in the next bill for no fault of mine. The water bills of residents living on the upper floors in our locality are left somewhere near staircases. Thus some bills usually get misplaced or lost. I live on the second floor. It is unfair to charge penalty or interest for non-payment of bill within the due date even without ensuring receipt of the bill by the consumer. The Delhi Jal Board must make fool-proof arrangements to ensure receipt of bills by consumers well before the due date.

Testing time

The Intelligence Bureau examination for the post of Assistant Central Intelligence Officer held on September 23 left me disturbed. The question paper was like an open book — without a seal or a serial number. So how can one expect the result to be fair?
