NEW DELHI: The Railways have sounded a red alert to thwart any attack by terrorists on trains during the Durga Puja festivities. Railway Board Chairman S.S. Khurana said the authorities have been directed to keep a vigil.

With regard to threats from naxalites, Mr. Khurana said the States were consulted and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was asked to keep an eye on the tracks to ensure smooth running of trains.

Earlier speaking at the Safety Convention 2009, Mr. Khurana linked safety with productivity and maintained that with investments in safety the profitability increased significantly. It not only contributed to productivity but also helped industry maximise efficiency and minimise downtime.

The Railways have decided to man 5,000 out of the 17,000 unmanned level crossings in the first phase.
