NEW DELHI: Employees of the Regional Passport Office at Bhikaji Cama Place here held a protest demonstration outside the office gate on Wednesday to express resentment over the manner in which privatisation of the passport system is being implemented.

Come together under the All-India Passport Employees' Association banner, the employees criticised the Union Government's move to invite private players in technology and manpower at a huge cost.

They said handling of passport matters was highly sensitive given the prevailing security scenario in the country.

“The extension of this responsibility to private players would hamper the credibility of the Government itself,” said one employee.

The protestors said private vendors should not be given monopoly or the sole right to accept passport applications. “The Government should keep its existing passport offices open for the public to give a healthy competition to private vendors.

Control of software must be in the Government's hands as it has technical expertise.

The proposal to keep software under the control of private vendors is unacceptable to us because it is not in the interest of the organisation or the employees'.”
