NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP Brinda Karat on Wednesday said the poor were being deprived of the power to make decisions on a global level, leading to an unequal situation for developing countries.

Speaking at a workshop on “Women Deepening Democracy: Transforming Politics for Gender Equality,” organised by the United Nations Democracy Fund and the U.N. Development Fund for Women here, Ms. Karat said the interpretation and practice of a liberal economy was leading the world away from the interests of the poor, be it at the Copenhagen climate talks or the WTO trade negotiations.
