NEW DELHI: Three young men who allegedly cheated people posing as Crime Branch officers have been arrested in South Delhi. The police have also arrested an alleged receiver of stolen property and recovered some articles.

The Saket police had on March 27 received a complaint from Ravi Ranjan alleging that some persons posing as Crime Branch sleuths robbed him and his friend of a laptop, two mobile phones and some documents.

Ravi and his friend Kunal were waiting for a bus along with some other persons at Lado Sarai around 5 a.m. when a car stopped there. The occupants enquired about the route to the New Delhi railway station.

A man standing nearby offered to show them the way stating that he was also going towards that direction.

Ravi and Kunal also requested for a lift and were allowed in.

On the way, the occupants claimed that they were Crime Branch sleuths and suggesting that they were investigating a case in which Rs 3.5 lakh had been stolen using ATM cards, they took the ATM and the PAN cards from Ravi and Kunal on the pretext of checking their authenticity. They also took passwords of the ATM cards from the victims, treating them as “suspects”.

The accused dumped the duo near the Akshardham Temple two hours later after robbing them of their belongings. The accused withdrew about Rs.15,000 through the ATM cards.

Acting on a tip-off about the suspects, the police arrested three of them, Pradeep, Joginder and Santosh. At their instance, the alleged receiver, Uday, was also arrested and the stolen laptop and a mobile phone were recovered.
