Punjab to get

four new prisons

The Punjab Government is setting up four new jails in the State as there are more than 26,000 prisoners but the capacity of jails is only 18,000, a top jails department official said here on Wednesday.

State Additional Director General Police (Prisons) Rajpal Meena said the jails are being built at Muktsar, Bathinda, Amritsar and Tarn Taran. The capacity of Sangrur and Nabha jails has recently been increased, he said.

“There are more than 26,000 prisoners, including 1,200 women inmates, as against the capacity of 18,000 prisoners in the jails of Punjab,” he said.

“Stress is being laid on the improving the quality of food and health services for prisoners,” he said. — PTI
