Eminent Pakistani sitarist Ustad Rias Khan was conferred the second Pandit Amarnath Vaggeyakar Samman by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar here on Thursday.

Presenting the award, Ms. Kumar said the rich cultural heritage shared by India and Pakistan reflects the glorious past enjoyed by both nations.

“During my recent visit to Pakistan, I felt that both India and Pakistan share a common heritage in the field of art, music and culture. This common culture reflects the glorious past of the two countries,” she said.

In this context, she said the ‘gharana' tradition is a common culture shared by the two countries as far as music is concerned.

Mr. Khan said he has enjoyed a lot of support from people on both sides of the border and that he would continue to cherish that.

The award was presented on the 88th birth anniversary celebrations of Pandit Amarnath. - PTI
